HITS Training & Consulting is hosting a two day training course for ALL OFFICERS. This 16 hour training course is designed specifically to train officers and K9 handlers about safety and using fundamentally sound techniques when assuming the role of decoy for police dogs.
The students will have the opportunity to experience and develop their decoy skills through hands-on training. Our instructors will cover the basics of K-9 communication between the decoy and the police dog. With decoy safety being at the forefront of this training, our instructors will emphasize time and time again the proper procedures to follow when conduct training scenarios and the value of clear communications between the decoy, the dog and the K-9 handler. We will cover topics that include targeting techniques, body suit bites, confidence building, calming, decoy approaches and posturing. We’ll also cover muzzle fighting, stressful environments and transitions from training to real world apprehensions.
We encourage our attendees to bring their body suits, sleeves and quality muzzles. Decoy work is physically demanding, staying well hydrated, taking periods of rest and self evaluation for heat exhaustion is highly recommended. Our instructors will monitor everyone who participates for signs of heat exhaustion, but you are responsible for your own well being. Don’t over do it!
To be further prepared, everyone is asked to bring their first aid kits and plenty of fluids. We are not anticipating any accidental bites, however we do recognize the potential for such occurrences when working with trained police dogs in aggression control and apprehension work. Safety First! it’s everyone’s responsibility when working as a decoy.
We require all attendees who actively participate as a decoy in the class be in an on duty status with their law enforcement agency and covered by their worker’s compensation insurance.
